RELIGIOUS WEDDING VOWS

Roman Catholic
“In God’s eyes do I, (Bride), take you, (Groom), from this day forward, to have and to hold, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health, until death do us part.”

Episcopal
“For it is my solemn vow that in the name of God, I, (Groom), take you (Bride), to be my lawfully wedded wife, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to have and to hold from this day forward, to love and to cherish, until we are parted by death.”

Protestant
“According to God’s holy ordinance, I pledge thee my faith that I (Bride), take thee, (Groom), to be my husband, to love and to cherish, to have and to hold, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, from this day forward in sickness and in health, till death do us part.”

Methodist
“Until we are parted by death, I solemnly vow, to you, (Groom), that I, (Bride), take you to be my husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, always and forever.”

Presbyterian
“I do promise and covenant, to you, (Bride), before God and these witnesses, that I, (Groom), will be your loving and faithful husband, in plenty and in want, in joy and in sorrow, in sickness and in health, as long as we both shall live

WEDDING VOW DEFINITIONS

  • Traditional vows. Traditional vows promise your love to your future spouse in a standard way without mentioning God or the presence of a dominant religious figure. A simple example would be, “I, (Groom), promise to love and cherish you, (Bride), for as long as we both shall live.”
  • Non-traditional vows. Non-traditional vows are promises to each partner that allow each of you to take a creative turn with your words. An example of a non-traditional vow would be, "I, (Groom), take you (Bride )
To be my Best friend and
    My True Love
I promise to Love, Honor, and Cherish You
    Through all of our years
And Through All that Life May Bring"
  • Religious vows. Religious vows are traditional vows that refer to God or the presence of a religious figure while making your lifelong promise to your partner.

Think about your occasion, the audience, and the location when considering which type is right for you.
